Soundiron Solo Dhol Drum KONTAKT
Soundiron Solo Dhol Drum KONTAKT
Welcome to our Solo Dhol drum library. The Solo Dhol contains over 5.100 samples and +100 different articulations, including sticks, mallets, brushes, hands/fingers, bass bends and more, all recorded in extraordinary detail in a close, dry studio setting. We deep sampled two professional Dhol Drums for this library, each with distinct characteristics and tones. These drums have animal hide bass heads (called "dagga”) and maylar treble heads (called "thili”). They dagga sides are tuned with a single heavy nylon rope, wound around the drum through steel rings. The thili heads are tuned with a series of steel lugs and rods, typical of most modern percussion.

We like to refer to the thili as "snare” and dagga as "bass”, since they sound and function in much the same way snare and bass drums are used in western music. Also, we don’t like to do anything in the usual way, because we’re a pack of weirdos. The thili sound ranges from that of roto-toms or smaller timables to nasty, abrasive, grainy and thrashing snare-like sounds, depending on the drum size, turning, mallet type, strike position and playing style. The dagga heads range from a bayan-like water drip to a taiko-like boom-crack. We beat the hell out of our Dhol, to push the sound as far as we could take it. For this deeper dry- and close-mic recorded collection, we used a wide variety of sticks, mallets, brushes and hand articulations, as well as unique tunings, to explore the widest possible range of sounds that these instrument were capable of. We recorded every single note with a full 10 round-robin variations and up to 14 velocity layers. The end-result is the deepest sampled Dhol in the history of sampling allowing you to make completely audio-realistic dhol grooves.

Functionality

The Solo Dhol Drum library includes two professional Dhol drums recorded in a dry studio environment. Deeply sampled, we achieved up to 14 velocity layers and 10 round robin per articulation. We recorded both thili (snare) and dagga (bass) with sticks, mallets, brushes fingers and hands. For the hand articulations, we’ve also included a set of nearly 40 tabla-like bass bends from slow to fast with 10 round robin each.

Included is a set of preset patches with pre-loaded custom convolution reverb impulses. We’ve divided these patches into three main types, "all master” which includes all articulations, "combo hands” including all hand articulations and "combo mallets” which includes all mallet articulations. For each of these three articulation types we’ve included five separate patches each with a distinct convolution. These convolutions are "bunker”, "garage”, "hall”, "stairwell” and "valley.”

The hammered dulcimer is a stringed instrument with 31 string pairs stretched over a trapezoidal shaped sound box. Usually, the hammered dulcimer is set on a stand in front of the musician, who holds small wooden mallet hammers to strike the strings.

The dulcimer has two bridges, a bass bridge near the right and a treble bridge on the left side. The bass bridge holds up bass strings, which are played to the left of the bridge. The treble strings can be played on either side of the treble bridge, playing them on the left side gives a note a fifth higher than playing them on the right of the bridge.

The strings of a hammered dulcimer are found in pairs, two strings for each note. Each set of strings is tuned in unison and is called a course. As with a piano, the purpose of using multiple strings per course is to make the instrument louder, although as the courses are rarely in perfect unison, a chorus effect usually results like a mandolin..

The Content
We recorded the hammered dulcimer in two microphone positions. At the top of the instrument we placed - in a ms stereo set-up - a pair of Neumann U87s and at the bottom we put a single condenser. These two positions are covering a wide range of sound and you are free to mix them at your own requirements. We played the hammered dulcimer in minor thirds and concentrated mainly on three different articulations. Firstly we recorded the „normal" notes which means that we hit the strings with the typical small wooden mallets, we called this articulation „Mallet". Furthermore we struck the strings with a drum stick which we called „Sticks" and finally we recorded an articulation where we struck the strings with a timpani mallet and damped the strings with the palm of the hand which we named „Muted". All these articulation were recorded in 4 round robin variation and up to 4 velocity layer.

8Dio Solo Frame Drums KONTAKT 8Dio Solo Frame Drums KONTAKT
8DIO Solo Frame Drum represents one of the most widespread and versatile families of drums – with a history crossing through ancient Middle East, India, Rome and through a variety of Islamic cultures. The Frame Drum defined by the simple characteristic that the width of the drumhead is greater then its depth, but besides from that the Frame Drum comes in thousands of variations. It is known for its distinct sustained sound and its multi-resonant qualities.

The Frame Drum is traditionally tuned with straps or lugs, while others are permanently set at a fixed pitch. Many also incorporate beads, rattles, cymbals, jingles, rings, bells, snares or other accessories, to augment the primary sound and add specialized auxiliary articulations. Some are played with hands, while others use thin sticks, thick bones, soft mallets, combs, brushes and other specialized tools to produce a huge range of unique musical tones and effects. Some members of the Frame Drum family may even lack a striking head and rely entirely on rattles or other elements to produce their sound.

The 8DIO "Solo Frame Drums” library contains 2 styles of Irish Bodhrn, one African Tar drum and a North American tribal buffalo hide shamanic drum. We captured them in a close dry studio setting, covering both traditional and expanded playing styles and articulations. The first Bodhrn is nearly 3 feet wide, with a massive low end much like a concert bass drum. The second is a deep shelled medium sized drum with powerful, clear tonality. The smallest, a tar drum, has a crisp, sharp ring. Our Buffalo drum has a flat, tight sound with a massive subsonic bass blast.

The library is truly covers the traditional sound of resonating frame drums. The library was also designed to be used in conjunction with our "Epic Frame Drums” library, which is focused on capturing big sound ensemble frames and over 1.100 loops. The two libraries makes the perfect couple, since "Solo Frame Drums” covers some of the more intimate and deep sounds – where "Epic Frame Drums” covers more that brutal, big, bad-ass type of sound used in epic scores.

We decided to sample this instrument deeper and more creatively then ever before in the history of samples. The best current water phone libraries contains approx. 180-200 samples, which is less then 1/15 of the Tonehammer Waterphone, which contains a mighty 2,903 samples recorded with a variety of bows, a huge set of mallets, metal devices, hands and other contraptions.

The library also contains a variety of more experimental patches, including boiled water at four different temperature levels, hydrophone recordings (underwater microphones in the waterphone), magnets on waterphone tines and filling waterphone with metal nails and other goodies. The sample library simply covers all thinkable and unthinkable type of articulations and we can proudly state we sampled the living soul out of the waterphone. All playable mallet programs contains our standard 10 velocity layer - 10 round robin for maximum playability. In addition Waterphone contains a bonus set of waterphone ambiences (note: Kontakt 3 only) made by Steven Tavaglione (Instrumentalist and Sound Designer; Wall-E, American Beauty, CSI, Supernatural and 100s other movies/shows/games).
